Study Design

Illustration of the quality of evidence of research papers from low evidence expert opinion, to observational studies, then experimental studies, followed by studies that have undergone critical appraisal

Studies that have undergone critical appraisal such as meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and evidence-based guidelines are considered to the highest quality evidence, followed by experimental studies such as randomized controlled trials, then observational studies like cohort and case studies. Non-systematic reports such as expert opinion fall at the bottom of the evidence pyramid.
